DO REAL-LIFE LOVE POTIONS WORK?

Is there a chemistry of love? There surely was in the wizard world. In the Harry Potter stories, love potions were brews of infatuation. In other words, if you drank a love potion, you became obsessed with the person who gave you the drink. Love potions were not only very powerful, they were also highly dangerous. The most powerful of these potions was Amortentia. It had a pearly look, and steam seemed to spiral off the top of the potion while it was being brewed.

Love potions were banned at Hogwarts. But witches and wizards still used them to try to win the hearts of others. Even Ron’s mom, Molly Weasley, said she had once brewed a love potion when she was a young witch at Hogwarts. The usual practice was to hide a love potion in food or drink, so the victim would know no better.

Getting potions into Hogwarts was tough. The Weasley shop, Wizard Wheezes, started selling a series of love potions as part of its WonderWitch promotion. And when Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch banned all their products from the school, Fred and George Weasley instead shipped in potions disguised as perfumes and cough syrups. So the young witches and wizards of Hogwarts traded in love potions, despite their owls being searched.

Now, Muggles have toyed with the idea of love potions for hundreds of years. Foods like chocolate, avocado, oysters, and honey have all been thought to be great for love. But what about Muggle love potions? And what’s the chance they might actually work?
